“Is the Perito Moreno Glacier worth it?” is almost never a question about ice. It is a question about a detour. El Calafate is a long way from most things, the day costs between $60 and $588, and the photographs online are so uniform that it is fair to wonder whether the real thing has anything left to show you.

It does, and the reason is structural rather than scenic. Most glaciers on earth are hard to approach: they end in open water, or behind a valley with no road, or above a climb that is its own expedition. Perito Moreno is the rare one with an architecture built around it. A circuit of steel walkways and panoramic balconies runs along the peninsula facing the wall, so you stand opposite a mass of ice at eye level rather than squinting at it from a viewpoint kilometres away. Best shorter trek: $450 or $520. Mini trekking is the classic format — crampons, about an hour on the ice, and the boat across Brazo Rico. The ice trek is the ten-hour version with crampons fitted at the glacier edge, 125 reviews at 4.5. Both are full days out of El Calafate and both put you on the glacier.
